Welcome to the latest addition to the Gawsworth website, as you may not be aware we are in the stoppage season which means that certain locks are closed down for either refurbishment or renewal. Below are some of the stoppages happening around cheshire and Staffordshire this winter. |

These are the stop planks which fit into grooves at most locks and nearly every bridgehole along the canal system, note the large holes which accommodate the paddles to allow water to pass around the gate to fill up the lock chamber. |

Fencing which has to be errected before any works can be carried out for the safety of BW personell and the general public. Note this photograph is taken from the opposite side as to the last one, you will see the water against the stop planks which is sealed by an old method of submerging ashes into the water. |

This is the paddle and frame which stands between the middle gates of the staircase locks. |

Here we have a cup which is what the gates pivot or hinge on, on the bottom of the gates is a pintle which houses in the round hole which you can see, besides the collar all the rest is held in by the weight of the gates. |

Another photo which shows the cill which is what the gates close up to to create a water tight seal. this is bolted down with large bolts and backfilled with sika. |

These are the new type of gates which we are getting now, these are solid instead of a frame and planking type. This of course makes the gates heavier. |
