VILLAGE DIARY

The days are cooling now and the colours are ebbing from the garden.  The leaves are beginning to drift down.  The first frost has felled the asters whose lovely mauves and pinks have framed my lawn of late.  There has been a bumper crop of apples as was clear from the auction at the Harvest Supper.
I hear that the better weather in September has improved the dire outlook for the harvest caused by the August rain but those farmers who were not able to get in their crops during a dry spell have had lower yields and weeds have been a problem.  Grass, however, has been growing well to help the dairy farmers feed the cows.
David Taylor of Marton tells me that the fewer numbers of birds in the gardens need not be a concern.  There is plenty of natural food in the countryside at present but in a couple of weeks’ time the birds will be back at our garden feeders.  The winter visitors are two weeks later this year; only a few fieldfares and redwings have been seen.  In contrast swallows did leave early this year in mid-September.
This is a rather melancholy time of year and the news does not help but, as we fill our Christmas Child boxes, we can share in the pleasure they will bring.

Gawsworth Ramblers

On Tuesday, November 18th, I have planned a local walk of 5/6 miles in the Kerridge area, lunching at the Lord Clyde, which has recently changed hands and has been recommended to me. We shall meet at  Church at 9.30 am.
A short distance of road walking brings us in to the Middlewood Way before joining the canal towpath to continue southwards. Fieldpaths to the west beckon, via Swanscoe Farm, to climb to Kerridge Saddle, descending to      Rainow village, to follow fieldpath contours in the lea of White Nancy to   Kerridge village to rejoin the canal, via Dawsons Farm, and road to the Lord Clyde.
Please let Barry know of your intention to walk/lunch so that the            appropriate lunch arrangements can be made at the Lord Clyde.

                                                            ------

The Ramblers Christmas Meal will be held on Thursday, December 18th at the Brownlow Inn, Brownlow – the cost will be £18.50 (including gratuities) and further details can be obtained from Barry on 01625 420018.

GAWSWORTH WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

A Gawsworth WI trip to the National War Memorial near Burton-on-Trent was an emotional day and very moving.  It is in memory of all those killed in action since World War II and is a place we should all visit at least once.  A group of ex-servicemen from Cambridgeshire were also visiting and told us how they had fought in Malaya and Korea, two had been prisoners for two tortuous years.     Remembrance Day is only a few weeks away and the WI will be making tea and coffee in the Parish Hall after the service at the Gawsworth memorial.
David Bratt talked to Gawsworth WI about the protection and upkeep of the   footpaths of Northern England, possibly hoping that some of the ladies might join his course but probably most will tread their kitchen floors doing baking rather than treading many of the rougher paths, but he was fascinating and the walkers of the world will be grateful as they tramp along a smooth and            unobstructed route.
Three members went china painting with Swettenham WI, two painted beautiful, delicate and feminine boxes and the third painted a dark greenish with black blobs looking more like a medical haemorrhoid diagram than the intended of     olives.
The next meeting is on 4 November at 7.30 pm in the Parish Hall.
