Gawsworth Ramblers

The Peak Forest Canal beckons us this month for a 5/6 mile walk – on Tuesday, February 28th ( NB the fourth Tuesday in the month) - meeting at church at 9.30 am and driving to Marple to park at the Ring o' Bells pub (OS960883) where we shall lunch later.

We follow the towpath of the Macclesfield Canal to the junction with the Peak Forest Canal and then follow the latter for two miles to leave the canal at this point and descend to Mill Green, Strines - crossing the Stockport/Sheffield railway line, we climb via the Mellor & Townscliffe Golf Course to the Linnet Clough Scout Campsite. A stoney bridlepath takes us via Bottoms Hall and the Roman Lakes to Marple Bridge and a short climb on the road follows before we join the canal at Lock 9 for a short walk back to the Ring o' Bells for lunch.

Please advise Barry of your intention to walk/lunch so the appropriate lunch arrangements can be made at the Ring o' Bells.

GAWSWORTH WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Undeterred by gale force winds and driving rain, the ladies of Gawsworth W.I. attended the first meeting of the year on Tuesday 3 rd January 2012 at the Village Hall on Church Lane. The new President Kate Dunn, Treasurer Gillian Crawford and Secretary Lesley Wright dealt swiftly and confidently with the agenda. Joyce Thornicroft, our imaginative Outings arranger, asked for interest in a selection of shopping trips and, with Christmas a distant memory, members eagerly signed up.

Guest speaker was Mr Geoffrey Royle, the subject, bees, and the competition a recipe made with honey. Mr Royle's presentation on the evolution of the bee included six thousand year old cave paintings from the Horn of Africa, more recent drawings of tubular bee hives from medieval France and expertly photographed and filmed bees from his own garden. The perfect hexagonal shape of the wax cells where different types of pollen, each used for a specific purpose, are stored; the meaning of the waggle-dance in directing the female workers to food sources; the nurturing of the larvae; the mysterious substance called propolis, were explained in fascinating detail. We sat wide eyed and open mouthed muttering superlatives and scratched our heads in an effort to recall O level geometry while at one point a member felt moved to quote Plato, or was it Euclid? Afterwards we had many questions expertly answered by Mr Royle. What are those sandy little volcanoes that appear in the flowerbeds? What is hidden behind the mud in the bundles of bamboo canes? We were left with a conundrum, is there a drawback to being a Queen Bee attended by four hundred male drones?

Consider this, she must lay up to a thousand eggs every day during her four year lifespan – you can do the maths! The competition was won by Lesley Wright with a humorous recipe involving whisky.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 7 th February 2012 at 7.30pm. guest speaker Roberta Bradley, Presenting: Beauty, a good skin care routine.

We welcome new members. Why not come along to a couple of meetings, free of charge, held on the first Tuesday in every month and see how and why being in the W.I is so enjoyable?
